Official Background Checks in Michigan

The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center keeps the state repository. Its Internet Criminal History Access Tool, known as ICHAT, provides a public name-based result for $10. The product covers reportable Michigan felony arrests and convictions plus serious-misdemeanor convictions. It excludes warrants, traffic matters, juvenile records, federal and tribal records, other states, local nonreportable misdemeanors, and material made nonpublic.

For self-review, a fingerprint record check gives stronger identity matching than a name search. Michigan-authorized Live Scan vendors and law-enforcement agencies capture prints when law or rule permits the purpose. Eaton County Sheriff offers walk-in general, CPL, and court-ordered fingerprinting. The base service is $15, with a stated $42 state or federal add-on in applicable cases and a $25 surcharge for out-of-county residents.

ICHAT requires the main identity fields before it runs the paid search. Complete, accurate inputs reduce mistaken matches, though a name result still lacks fingerprint certainty.

Eaton County Record Portals Compared

MiCOURT, ICHAT, and OTIS answer different questions. MiCOURT is case-centered. ICHAT is person-centered and draws from reportable criminal-history submissions across Michigan. Each file freezes a different point in the process. An arrest charge may change when the prosecutor reviews the matter, and the final judgment may differ again. Read the sources together before drawing a conclusion.

Eaton County Sheriff Records Counter

The Sheriff's Records Section says it processes and maintains more than 20,000 criminal and noncriminal reports per year. Staff provide releasable reports and documents, answer general records questions, and handle fingerprinting. The office at 1025 Independence Boulevard is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., except holidays. A front-lobby drop box accepts after-hours submissions.

That counter is the right place for a sheriff-created report. A Charlotte, Grand Ledge, or Eaton Rapids police narrative still belongs to the city department that created it.

Posted charges include $10 for an accident report and $2.50 for purchase-permit notarization, with the notary fee waived for a current CPL holder. FOIA charges vary by the labor and materials needed. No official flat fee for a local criminal-history letter was located, so callers should describe the exact record instead of asking for a vague background report.

Eaton County Criminal Records: What They Contain

The fields depend on the custodian. A Michigan repository history may include names and aliases, birth information, personal descriptors, fingerprints tied to arrest cycles, an arresting agency, charges, disposition, and sentence. The public ICHAT result omits nonpublic identifiers and excluded categories. Court records organize events by case, while booking material centers on a custody episode.

A disposition is the final recorded outcome of a charge or case. It should never be inferred from an arrest entry. If a public screen lacks the judgment, request the filed document from the clerk.

Eaton County Jail Record Fallback

Eaton County does not publish a clearly official live jail roster on the county pages reviewed for this build. For a recent booking, call the jail at 517-543-3512, search 56A District Court for arraignment activity, and request releasable booking information through the sheriff. Ask for concrete fields such as booking number and time, arresting agency, booking charge, bond or hold, court number, custody status, release date, and a booking photo only if legally releasable.

OTIS becomes relevant only if MDOC custody or community supervision begins. The federal BOP locator is used for federal custody. Neither proves that a person is currently housed in Eaton Jail. Medical screening, suicide-watch, housing classification, victim data, and security details are not ordinary public booking-profile fields.

Michigan Public Access Laws

Michigan law separates agency records, court files, statewide criminal-history data, and set-aside information. A written FOIA request can seek an existing nonexempt sheriff or county record, but it does not force an office to answer questions or create a new analysis. Court files follow clerk procedures and Michigan Court Rule 8.119. ICHAT dissemination is governed by the criminal-history statute.

Protected victim information, juvenile material, personal identifiers, active investigative detail, and sealed content may be redacted or withheld. A denial should identify its basis and appeal rights. Public access also carries a duty to distinguish an allegation from a conviction.

Eaton County FOIA Records Timeline

A Sheriff FOIA request must be written and can be sent by mail, email, fax, or delivered in person. Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records

Michigan commonly uses “set aside” and “expungement” for conviction relief. A set-aside makes an eligible conviction nonpublic rather than erasing every trace from history. Juvenile files, sealed documents, protected victim details, and nonpublic identifiers also fall outside an ordinary public Eaton County criminal records search.

Eligibility under Michigan's set-aside law depends on conviction counts and types, exclusions, waiting periods, and completion of the sentence. The applicant uses current court forms, files in the court of conviction, serves the required agencies, supplies fingerprints and certified material as directed, and attends a hearing if one is set. Eaton County applicants must first determine whether 56A District or 56th Circuit entered the judgment.
