Arrest Records in Eaton County

An Eaton County arrest starts several records. The arresting agency creates an incident or arrest report. Eaton County Jail makes the booking entry, takes fingerprints and a photograph, records property, and adds charge, hold, bond, and custody details. District Court creates the complaint, arraignment, and bond docket. The prosecutor may authorize charges that differ from the officer’s first allegation. Final court dispositions then flow back to Michigan State Police when reportable.

The Eaton County Sheriff, Charlotte Police, Grand Ledge Police, Eaton Rapids Police, Michigan State Police, and other local agencies may create the first report. Ask the agency that made the arrest for that report. The Sheriff’s Records Section is not the custodian of a city police report merely because the person later entered Eaton Jail. A complete arrest history may require the agency file, booking data, court judgment, and ICHAT entry.

Find a Recent Eaton Booking

Eaton County does not publish a verified official live jail roster on the county site. No official Sheriff app was found either. Call the jail at 517-543-3512 to ask whether a person is currently housed, then use a written records request for releasable booking information. Do not rely on a similarly named commercial app or unofficial roster. An absence from the web cannot establish that no arrest occurred.

The facility houses pretrial detainees, sentenced jail inmates, people awaiting MDOC transport, and some people held under contracts with other counties.

The Sheriff’s published history describes the expanded post-2007 facility as designed for 366 people. That number is a design capacity, not a claim about today’s population. The Corrections Division says the jail can hold pretrial detainees, people serving misdemeanor or felony jail sentences, work-release participants, and people awaiting transport. It also rents open beds to other counties. Those groups can share one facility while their arrest reports, cases, and long-term custody records remain in different systems.

Eaton County Arrest Lookups

The best route depends on the question. Current custody belongs with the jail. The narrative belongs with the arresting agency. Filed charges belong with 56A District Court, followed by 56th Circuit Court after felony bindover. ICHAT provides a later public statewide history, while OTIS applies only when MDOC custody or supervision begins.

1. Identify the arresting agency, approximate date, and place, then call Eaton Jail at 517-543-3512 for current custody.
2. Request the report from the creating agency. Use Sheriff Records for a Sheriff event and the city’s FOIA route for a city police event.
3. Search 56A District Court by name for the complaint and arraignment. Search 56th Circuit Court if a felony was bound over.
4. Use ICHAT later for reportable Michigan history and OTIS only for MDOC custody or supervision.
5. Resolve a mismatch with the filed complaint, final judgment, and, when needed, an MSP correction review.

Note: ICHAT excludes warrants, so confirm a possible warrant with the issuing Eaton court and the Sheriff’s public verification procedure.

Request Eaton Sheriff Arrest Reports

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Records Section processes and maintains more than 20,000 criminal and noncriminal reports per year. For a Sheriff arrest, ask for an existing report by date, location, report number if known, and the names needed to locate it. The office provides releasable records, but does not post a flat local-history-letter fee.

If a counter request does not resolve the need, submit a written Michigan FOIA request by mail, email, fax, or in person. A request cannot be made orally by phone. Give a complete name, address, phone or email, and a clear description of the records.

The county generally responds within five business days by granting, denying, partly granting, extending once for ten business days, or pointing to a free online record. A deposit may apply when estimated processing exceeds $50 or an older request remains unpaid.

Arrest Records: What They Contain

Ask for fields that connect the arrest, booking, and court case. Eaton County has not exposed a public sample booking profile, so the request itself should name the needed data. Medical screening, exact housing assignments, suicide-watch information, security classifications, victim data, and protected personal identifiers should not be expected in a public response.

Route Eaton Arrest Record Requests

The jail’s location does not decide who owns the arrest report. Charlotte, Grand Ledge, and Eaton Rapids keep reports created by their police departments. Michigan State Police uses its own public-records route. Incidents in Lansing’s Eaton County portion remain with Lansing Police, while court and custody routes depend on venue and charging.

A specific city incident should begin with that city. The Sheriff may confirm jail custody but cannot supply another police department’s underlying narrative.

A release can also end the current-custody trail before the agency or court record is complete. Eaton Arrests Across Custody Systems

Eaton Jail, MDOC’s Offender Tracking Information System, and the federal Bureau of Prisons track different populations. The county jail holds local pretrial and jail-sentence custody. OTIS covers people currently in MDOC prison, probation, or parole status and people discharged from supervision within the prior three years. The federal locator covers federal custody. A person can move from Eaton Jail to MDOC, but that later transfer does not turn OTIS into a county booking log.

Use the level that matches current custody rather than searching each system as if it held the same data.

The official OTIS search supports name, MDOC number, sex, race, age, and status filters.

OTIS may display sentence and supervision facts after an Eaton case reaches MDOC, but it excludes most county arrestees.

Search OTIS with at least a last name or MDOC number. A wildcard may follow three leading letters of a last name, and an offender number overrides other criteria. Results can include aliases, sentence offenses, minimum and maximum dates, location, parole or probation status, and discharge information. Those fields describe corrections custody or supervision. They do not supply the Eaton arrest narrative, initial booking charge, or every person released from the county jail.

Eaton Arrest Charges Can Change

A booking charge records what was entered at intake. The Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney may authorize a different charge after reviewing the police submission. District Court then receives the complaint and creates the arraignment record. A felony can later move to Circuit Court, and a plea may resolve an amended count. Compare the arrest report, complaint, register of actions, and judgment before stating an outcome.

Arrest Records vs Conviction Records

An arrest record proves that an arrest or booking event was recorded. It does not prove guilt. A conviction requires a court judgment after a plea or verdict. Some bookings lead to no filed charge, and some filed cases end in dismissal or acquittal. ICHAT may show reportable felony arrest information, but it still must be compared with the Eaton court disposition.
